TMJ Pain or Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)

TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which acts like a sliding hinge connecting your lower jaw (mandible) to your skull. You have two of these joints, located on either side of your head directly in front of your ears. It facilitates three-dimensional movement: up and down, side-to-side, and forward and back. A small cartilage disc sits between the bones to absorb shock and ensure smooth motion while you eat, speak, or breathe.

While "TMJ" refers to the joint itself, the term is frequently used to describe temporomandibular disorders (TMD). TMD involves pain and limited movement in the joint, often caused by stress-related clenching, teeth grinding, injury, or even poor posture. Common symptoms also include jaw clicking and headaches.

Acupuncture is effective for TMD. Electroacupuncture (acupuncture with electrical stimulation) can also be used, and laser acupuncture is a needleless alternative for those who dislike needles. Lok-Kwan Acupuncture offers all those treatment options in combination with neuro-acupuncture which addresses the responsible nerves directly. While some patients feel immediate relief, a standard course of 6 to 12 sessions is usually recommended for lasting results.
